I believe in the science of reading.
The five critical components of teaching reading are:
Phonemic Awareness- The ability to hear, separate and manipulate individual sounds. “The best predictor of reading difficulty in kindergarten or first grade is the inability to segment words and syllables into constituent sound units (phonemic awareness)" Reid Lyon, 1995 Phonemic Awareness Activities
Phonics- The study of rules and patterns of language. Systematic phonics requires explicit instruction that follows intentional skill progression.
Vocabulary- Late readers lack reading experience and exposure to new words. Expose children to audio books, read alouds and meaningful conversation.
Fluency- Efficient reading and writing are achieved through skill building and practice of specific language rules, patterns, and exceptions. Put in the reps to achieve automaticity.
Comprehension- The purpose of reading is to decipher meaning from text. One must fluently decode words they have never seen before; these unknown words often represent key information. Poor comprehension can be a byproduct of poor decoding skills and lack of fluency. Late readers often lack vocabulary, background knowledge and practice and are robbed of hours and hours of practice.
