Welcome to Our Reading Wonderland!

It is my responsibility to teach every child. If a child isn’t engaged in a lesson, it is my responsibility to change how I am teaching. Undesirable behavior is most often due to student frustration. This is something I can fix.

I am excited to share what I have learned and hope that others feel the joy of growing a love of reading in children, too!

I believe in the science of reading.

The five critical components of teaching reading are:

Phonemic Awareness

The ability to hear, separate and manipulate individual sounds. “The best predictor of reading difficulty in kindergarten or first grade is the inability to segment words and syllables into constituent sound units (phonemic awareness)" Reid Lyon, 1995

Phonics

The study of rules and patterns of language. Systematic phonics requires explicit instruction that follows intentional skill progression.

Vocabulary

Late readers lack reading experience and exposure to new words. Expose children to audiobooks, read-alouds, and meaningful conversations.

Comprehension

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Fluency

Efficient reading and writing are achieved through skill-building and practice of specific language rules, patterns, and exceptions. Put in the reps to achieve automaticity.
